The University of New Mexico (UNM), through its Department of Psychiatry, has been developing the Spring Conference on Psychiatry for several years. In 2024, the conference will be jointly coordinated by Psychiatric Medical Association of New Mexico and the Executive Secretary of the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America and Dominican Republic (SE-COMISCA).

In the region of the Central American Integration System (SICA), which includes Central America and the Dominican Republic, the definition of Mental Health proposed by the World Health Organization is adopted: “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities, overcomes the normal stresses of life, works productively and fruitfully, and contributes something to his or her community.” The event is called “Focusing on the Strengths of Our Culture: The Mental Health of Our Children and Youth Beyond Borders. In which the positive characteristics of the Latino culture that contribute to a healthy mental development, promoting family values and emotional support networks will be highlighted.
