Event Description
Primary frontline professionals can be the difference between life and death for patients and community members, yet they are continually at risk for physical injury, compassion fatigue and burnout. And the COVID-19 global pandemic and other epidemics in New Mexico continue to impact first responders and frontline health care workers in unprecedented ways. Our program offers support and resources to combat these hurdles.
Using the ECHO Model, our program teaches self-care techniques, resiliency and capacity building and best practices. We also foster a community of support from peers, physicians and behavioral health experts.

Event Description
Tragedy doesn’t always happen to someone else, but even if it did, would you help if you could? “Anyone can get broken.”
The words effortlessly formed by a marine who once did not believe them himself, until a tragic plane crash sent his life down a path he never thought possible. A teenage girl who doesn’t expect to grow up, and lacks the will to do so. A young boy tormented by his own spiraling thoughts he could not control. These are just a few of the thousands of stories that far too often end in heartbreak for family and friends. Silouan, Tonja, Kevin, Misha, Craig, and Ally each share their remarkable stories of triumph over trauma, pain, and mental health challenges. Follow them as Dr. Thomas Joiner takes a look into what leads a person to these dark places, but more importantly, how to help them find their way back. Five Lanes Crisis Partners, including RI International and Behavioral Health Link, work together to support and power the Moving America’s Soul on Suicide (MASoS) documentary film. Collectively, our family of companies provide a full continuum of crisis and peer services throughout the United States and abroad. They are also behind a number of other innovative initiatives, including the Crisis Now Academy, #CrisisTalk and Hope Inc. Stories. PARKING INFORMATION: Parking will be free. Attendees are to park at G-Lot (located off of University Blvd NE and Tucker Ave NE). Shuttle service will be available to take attendees to the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education Auditorium. For any questions please email clintbh@salud.unm.edu |

The University of New Mexico (UNM), through its Department of Psychiatry, has been developing the Spring Conference on Psychiatry for several years. In 2024, the conference will be jointly coordinated by Psychiatric Medical Association of New Mexico and the Executive Secretary of the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America and Dominican Republic (SE-COMISCA).

This activity will contribute to improving the competencies of professionals by highlighting the positive aspects of Latino culture as elements that contribute to improving and promoting the mental health of Latin Americans both in the U.S. and in their countries of origins.
Learning objectives/outcomes
- Identify protective factors for mental illnesses of Hispanic children and youth in Latin America and the United States.

All practitioners who have a current DEA registration that includes Schedule III authority, may now prescribe buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder in their practice if permitted by applicable state law and SAMHSA encourages them to do so. SAMHSA and DEA are actively working on implementation of a separate provision of the Omnibus related to training requirements for DEA registration that becomes effective in June 2023.
Waiver not needed, but training is!
This free four-hour training is for providers who wish to gain the skills and confidence to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). While providers are NO LONGER required to obtain a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD, we will continue to offer trainings so that providers will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to successfully prescribe buprenorphine for OUD. This training will empower prescribers to provide lifesaving treatment to patients with OUD.
We will need at least 3 RSVP’s in order to hold the training.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely used approaches and has been demonstrated to be effective for a wide range of problems and diagnoses. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. CBT is based on several core principles including that challenges are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior. CBT can facilitate learning of better ways of coping and involves efforts to change thinking patterns. This workshop will be highly interactive and will provide participants with many opportunities to exercise CBT tools. Motivational Interviewing (MI) Level 1 Motivational Interviewing is one of the most heavily researched interventions in the fields of addiction, behavioral health and medicine. Study after study has reliably demonstrated that implementing this practice with proficiency and consistency will improve outcomes for consumers of behavioral healthcare. MI is an approach that attempts to move an individual away from a state of indecision or uncertainty and towards finding motivation to making positive decisions and accomplishing established goals. MI as a directional, consumer-centered style of interacting with the goal of eliciting behavior change by helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence. Rather than acting in an antagonistic or combative way, the helper engages with the consumer to explore his/her feelings, including ambivalence about changing, and help clients find their own motivations. This workshop provides participants with an overview of the research and theoretical base for the model. In this online training, participants will also practice MI strategies and skills in small groups throughout the day. Event Details
Relationship to Feeling Gives Rise to Self: Physical and psychological trauma can become chronically painful and disruptive when they are experienced in the context of interpersonal isolation, dismissal, minimization, and compromised attunement (described here as a combination of empathy and compassion-oriented engagement). Our nervous system is inclusive of a set of structures that bring emotional information into a sense of feeling when the information is determined to be salient to our survival. At a young age, we learn to relate to this information largely through how it is modeled for us by those we rely on for survival, e.g. primary caregivers, family, peers, and community. When a relationship to this important emotional information is not adequately modeled or is continuously met with contention, dismissal, and resistance, we easily divorce ourselves from attending to the information helpfully. When habituated to this behavior, we can experience a myriad of seemingly disconnected difficulties, including chronic hopelessness, dissociation, impairing anxiety, obsession, compulsion, avoidance, chronic and seemingly uncontrollable mood disturbances, and many more. This training aims to disseminate information on research and practices that may guide professionals as they support relational growth or regrowth to felt emotional experience. The training also aims to highlight how these approaches can greatly support the restoration of functional capacity. Experiential exercises are a component of this training. This online training requires a working camera and microphone to attend, there will be a noon-1pm lunch break, MST, both days. (12 CEUs)
